Haiya is Kenya’s most renowned entertainment website. But don’t let their slogan (join the conversation) fool you. There is not much conversation going on there. Well, there are blog postings from site visitors but that is just about it.
I don’t mean to be mean to the admin. Actually, they deserve a couple of commendations.
First, they really get the social media concept. By use of social bookmarking gadgets they enable users to share the content across the web. But it wouldn’t hurt to put dig buttons on each article o submit it for “digging” at dig.com. Second, he articles are really interactive. You can vote up or down content much like it’s done on digg. That way new visitors can know what others like most. They way articles are tagged also makes reading great. There is a tag cloud in the FrontPage that enbles eople locate content easily. Especially because the more common a tag is, the larger the font size. That is creative. But not new.
Registration is simple but sign up is not on the go. You have to use a cmputr generated password they send to our email address for your first log in. This is probably a good thing if you are trying to get only serious content generators to post stuff. The site moderators are also doing good job considering the quality of content here.
Haiya majors onlocalcontent. From music to news to videos. It is a great website. But then again, with the kind of resources they have, they should be able to make the fingerprints of the open source platform on which it is based disappear.
